A good first outing, or almost, as last weekend’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe round in Barcelona saw only half of the scheduled races take place.

The fifth of the continental championship’s six rounds marked the series debut of experienced racer Michele Merendino, who shared driving duties with Britain’s Philip Truman, also making his first appearance in the championship.

At the Spanish circuit, the Rexal Villorba Corse pairing finished sixth in the Lamborghini Cup in the second and only race of the weekend, after Saturday’s opening race was cancelled due to a severe weather alert that brought all activities to a halt until 2 pm the following day.

For the Italian driver, who boasts an extensive career at the highest levels and is now a GT Ambassador for WYDA (World Young Drivers Academy) and a Lamborghini Accademia instructor, it was a positive return following his brief outing at Portimão earlier this year in GT Cup Europe, also at the wheel of a Lamborghini, where an unexpected setback had left him with hardly any laps completed.

Truman also performed well, making steady progress throughout the weekend and qualifying eighth in class in Saturday morning’s opening session, while Merendino immediately secured second place in the second session, just a few tenths off pole.
